Getting Around
There are many ways to get around Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and the entire Mayan Riviera coastline. There is a major highway (307) that runs along the entire coastline which is serviced by public buses, taxis, and “colectivos.” A colectivo looks like a 10-person van that we normally see as airport shuttles.
Public Bus:
The bus is a terrific option to get from the Mayan Palace resort to Playa del Carmen for about $1. You will need to walk out of the main entrance of the resort and cross the highway. On the other side of the highway, a bus will be along in about 10 minutes. The driver does not have change so have the money ready. I can’t remember the precise amount in pesos, but one american dollar is slightly more than needed - so just give them a dollar and all is well. Ride this bus all the way to the bus station in Playa del Carmen. The bus station is right in the heart of Playa on the strip.
Colectivos:
A colectivo is a good middle-of-the-road option. Faster than riding the bus, but slower than a taxi due to several stops. A colectivo is a white 10-person van used for public transportation. These are all around and you can even flag one down on the highway and they will pick you up if enough room. These are generally very reasonable in price - a few bucks. It’s best to have small bills and coins since they do not carry much change. When a colectivo approaches he will flash his headlights if he has space in his van. If you want a ride wave your arm and he will stop. If the driver sees that you are a tourist he will probably stop anyway and pick you up.

Taxis:
Taxis are the fastest way to get around, but also the most expensive. A sample taxi fare from Cancun to Playa del Carmen is about 350 pesos (about 35 bucks). A fare from Playa del Carmen to the Mayan Palace resort is about 180 pesos (around 18 bucks). We like to take the bus into Playa for $1, but sometimes we are carrying around several bags or would like a more convenient return trip - so we take the taxi home.
