Most tourist professionals speak English well but an effort to speak Spanish is appreciated. Tips are appreciated also. We bring a stack of US singles and have no problem using them. Most places take dollars and credit cards. NO PROBLEMA!
Cell Phones:
Our cell phones do not generally work in Mexico by default. However, if necessary you can contact your cell phone provider to enable the service for additional fees. Another option is that you can rent a cell phone in Mexico. If you are considering renting a cell phone, one option found on the Internet is cancunvalet.com. It looks like you save some money if you purchase both airport transfers and a cell phone together, because of the convenience of the driver simply handing the phone over to you.
Hotel Phones / Calling Cards:
Be VERY careful about calling the United States using phones in a hotel room. There are all kinds of hidden charges and fine print. We have first-hand experience even after being careful about understanding charges. A 10-15 minute call ended up costing about $40-50. We recommend purchasing an INTERNATIONAL calling card and using a hotel lobby phone or public phone to prevent any surprise charges from appearing on your room or credit card. Renting a cell phone or enabling your current cell phone are other options.
